Kate Moss: I suffered a nervous breakdown at 17

Kate Moss said ex-boyfriend Johnny Depp advised her to 'never complain, never explain' - but now she's telling all about heroin chic, heartbreak and her teenage nervous breakdown.

Kate Moss suffered a nervous breakdown due to the pressures of modelling and cried for "years and years" after splitting up with Johnny Depp, she has admitted in her most revealing interview.

The usually reticent Moss opened up to Vanity Fair magazine about her struggles to cope with life in the industry.

Scouted at 14, she made her breakthrough with a Corinne Day shoot for The Face but found the whole thing excruciating.

"I see a 16-year-old now, and to ask her to take her clothes off would feel really weird. But they were like, 'If you don't do it, then we're not going to book you again'. So I'd lock myself in the toilet and cry and then come out and do it," she said.

Moss became a global star in 1992 when she appeared with Mark Wahlberg in a Calvin Klein campaign shot by Herb Ritts, but the experience pushed her over the edge.

"I had a nervous breakdown when I was 17 or 18, when I had to go and work with Marky Mark and Herb Ritts," Moss said.

"It didn't feel like me at all. I felt really bad straddling this buff guy. I didn't like it.

"I couldn't get out of bed for two weeks. I thought I was going to die. I went to the doctor and he said, 'I'll give you some Valium,' and Francesca Sorrenti [Moss's friend and mother of Mario Sorrenti], thank God, said, 'You're not taking that'.

"It was just anxiety. Nobody takes care of you mentally. There's a massive pressure to do what you have to do.

"I was really little, and I was going to work with Steven Meisel. It was just really weird - a stretch limo coming to pick you up from work. I didn't like it. But it was work and I had to do it."

Moss said she felt secure only when she met Hollywood actor Johnny Depp. The couple got together in 1994 but split in 1998, and Moss was left heartbroken.

She told the magazine: "There's nobody that's ever really been able to take care of me. Johnny did for a bit. I believed what he said. Like if I said, 'What do I do?' - he'd tell me. And that's what I missed when I left. I really lost that gauge of somebody I could trust.

"Nightmare. Years and years of crying. Oh, the tears..."
Moss, 38, became the poster girl for 'heroin chic' in the 1990s, a tag she struggled to shift.
She denied ever taking the drug and said her waif-like appearance was down to a lack of food. "At that time I was staying at a B&B in Milan, and you'd get home from work and there was no food. You'd get to work in the morning, there was no food.

"Nobody took you out for lunch when I started. Carla Bruni took me out for lunch once. She was really nice. Otherwise, you don't get fed."

Her reputation as a party girl has endured, but Moss insisted she has calmed down and now enjoys quiet nights in with her husband Jamie Hince and daughter Lila.

She said: "I don't really go to clubs any more. I'm actually quite settled. Living in Highgate with my dog and my husband and daughter. I'm not a hell-raiser."

The interview coincides with publication of Kate: The Kate Moss Book , a retrospective of her career in which she is quoted as saying: "I was lucky to be with Johnny... he taught me a lot about fame.

"He told me 'never complain, never explain'. That's why I don't use Twitter and things like that. I don't want people to know what is true all the time and that's what keeps the mystery."

Moss also reveals how the constant paparazzi culture has defined her style, which sees her mainly opt for grey or black clothes. "If you do a different look every day, they're going to be waiting for the next look, and then it's a paparazzi shot. Whereas if you just wear the same thing, then they get bored and leave you alone."

Maison Martin Margiela for H&M

H&M have announced that British photographer and film director Sam Taylor-Wood has shot the print and film campaigns for their highly-anticipated collaboration with Maison Martin Margiela.

A behind-the-scenes look at the Maison Martin Margiela for H&M campaign, shot by Sam Taylor-Wood.

There's even more reason to get excited about Maison Martin Margiela's upcoming collaboration with H&M as it has been announced that photographer and director Sam Taylor-Wood has shot the accompanying print and film campaigns.

Taylor-Wood photographed the as-yet-unseen campaign on the streets of Paris in collaboration with creative director Markus Kiersztan. The store has released one behind-the-scenes image, which shows Taylor-Wood photographing a model in an oversized jacket, stood inbetween two covered cars in front of a grand Paris building.

"Working with such an anarchic house as Martin Margiela alongside a high-street brand was a challenge that creatively became a crazy, fun project," the artist told WWD . "I wanted to create an atmosphere that was both quiet and still. That each person was in their own emotional and physical thought space. A world away from the heady atmosphere of the usual urban noise."

Taylor-Wood has close ties to the fashion world - she's friends with Kate Moss and Stella McCartney, has previously shot a campaign for Bottega Veneta and appeared in Louis Vuitton's 'Double Exposure' campaign. She recently married actor AaronTaylor-Johnson, who she met when she directed him in her debut film Nowhere Boy in 2008.

Kate Moss and George Michael take their friendship to the cover of Vogue Paris

Neighbours, friends, and now cover stars. Kate Moss and BFF George Michael land the October 2012 cover of Vogue Paris.

George and Kate, sitting in a tree, K.I.S.S.I.N.G. Well, probably not the last bit, but the celebrity pair - who are also neighbours in London's chi-chi Highgate Village, really do seem to be the best of friends at the moment.

After Moss moaned that being left out of Michael's Freedom 90 supermodel video was her greatest career regret, Michael promptly made amends by giving Croydon's finest a starring role in his latest single 'White Light' in which she flips a coin to decide the singer's fate.

George later told Magic FM that he chose Kate because she reminds him of his late mum, who the singer was extremely close to. "Every boy who has lost their mum thinks his mum was the most beautiful woman in the world. Why not ask someone who is considered the most beautiful woman in the world in many ways to be that figure?" Welling up here already…

Now the pair have had their love-in committed to fashion history thanks to a Vogue Paris cover and spread shot by renowned photographer, Mario Testino.

We haven't had a peek between the sheets yet, and the cover line 'The pop star falls for the top model, by Mario Testino' doesn't give much away, but this much we do know: A bronzed and bearded George looks in fine fettle after his brush with death last year, and is busting an altogether much more acceptable outfit than the world of leather festival he showed up in at the Olympics Closing Ceremony, while Moss still scrubs up well for the camera (though we would LOVE to get a glimpse of the re-touching bill).

Kate Moss goes for Olympic gold

Supermodel Kate Moss poses in gold McQueen gown for British Vogue shoot to mark the Olympic Closing Ceremony. But is this the dress she'll wear on the night?

Her sporting credentials extend to walking her dog in the country and practising yoga, but Kate Moss has got into the Olympic spirit in the latest issue of Vogue.

The 38-year-old supermodel poses in the pages of the monthly style bible in a gold encrusted, bias-cut gown conceived by Sarah Burton of Alexander McQueen to celebrate the London 2012 Closing Ceremony.

In collaboration with the British Fashion Council, Vogue commissioned visionary photographer Nick Knight to capture Moss and fellow top British models wearing unique designs by the country's top design talent.

Fellow super, Naomi Campbell, also sports McQueen in the shoot, while aristocratic beauty Stella Tennant can be seen in Christopher Kane. Lilys Cole and Donaldson wear Erdem and Vivienne Westwood respectively, while Burberry favourite Jourdan Dunn dons Jonathan Saunders. Gap-toothed Georgia May Jagger has been outfitted in Victoria Beckham while man-of-the-moment David Gandy wears Paul Smith.

With rumours abounding that Vogue's line-up of models will star in the actual London 2012 Closing Ceremony, is this a teaser of the frocks that are to grace Stratford's Olympic Stadium? However one thing is for sure: with top Brazilian model Alessanda Ambrosio in the house to participate in the handover of the Olympic Flag from London to Brazil, the host nation of the next Summer Olympic Games, August 12 is set to be the most stylish date of the year.

The Kate Moss Book is coming

Supermodel Kate Moss is the subject of a new tome that will be published in November, and which is edited by her former partner Jefferson Hack.

Sadly, the book we're talking about isn't a tell-all autobiography penned by Moss herself; instead, it's a coffee table tome dedicated to her incredible body of work over the last 20 years.

The Kate Moss Book has been edited by Moss' former flame, father of her daughter Lila and editor of Dazed and Confused , Jefferson Hack, and close friend and casting director, Jess Hallett.

Moss has had a hand in the creation of the volume too, personally selecting the images she wanted to be included in order to create a publication that "spans the entirety of her unparalleled career, from model to fashion designer, and muse to icon."

Kate Moss saves George Michael’s life

British supermodel Kate Moss makes a life-saving cameo in George Michael's latest music video.

In the words of Gabrielle, dreams can come true - especially if you're Kate Moss and that dream involves George Michael.

The singer took to his Twitter page to confirm rumours that Kate had filmed a cameo in the video for his new single, White Light , which is said to be all about his recent battle with pneumonia.
"Oh and by the way, in the video, a certain supermodel (Kate) saves my life. We shot two endings, one with the heimlich menouvre...and one where she gives me full on CPR. Mouth to mouth. Not really," he tweeted. "But honestly, she is my saviour, on film at least."

It's not the first music video Moss has appeared in - she pole-danced in the video for The White Stripes' 'I Just Don't Know What to Do With Myself' in 2003 and also appeared in Primal Scream's Some Velvet Morning video.

Kate Moss turns Auctioneer and Photographer for an Evening

Model Kate Moss shows her charitable - and multi-talented side - at a fundraising dinner at Claridge's.

Kate Moss is still popping up on the odd Vogue cover and can be seen on billboards modelling for Mango, but it appears she's spending the rest of her time homemaking in Highgate and enjoying food festivals at her country retreat (yes.... really!!).

Last night she diversified her hobbies one step further by auctioning off a painting by her good friend, Rolling Stones rocker Ronnie Wood. As mentioned in 'The Telegraph', Kate was at Claridge's hotel in London at a fundraiser in honour of Marie Curie Cancer Care, and dutifully modelled the portrait of Rod Stewart - Ronnie's old bandmate from his Faces days - to the privileged guests, before it was sold for £12,000 (almost 71,000 AED)

Bumping into her sometime collaborator, photographer David Bailey, it appears Moss was inspired to take a few snaps of her own, as she was seen toting an enormous camera and pointing it at the well-heeled crowd, which included Sarah Ferguson and her daughter Princess Beatrice.
